In the P&T WG, we’ve discussed the desire to push more and more awareness of environmental metadata down into the proxies themselves (instead of relying on Mixer to look them up at each Check/Report call). Such functionality will be a key enabler in the shift to an Mixer-less Istio architecture (sometimes referred to as Mixer V2).
Towards that end, we are proposing to add k8s environmental metadata to the Envoy node metadata, via pilot-agent and the sidecar injector. The proposal is here: https://tinyurl.com/yxablanu (available via Istio Community Team Drive).
